This has been a funny season so far in the National Football League to say the least. The books can’t seem to makes lines high enough for some of the power-house chalk.
Week seven on October 25th was the worst of all seven weeks this season for Nevada sportsbooks and could go down as one of the worst of all time. The official Nevada Sportsbook counts were not out as of this writing. But when chalk go 10-3-1 against the number we know the wagerers have a field-day and the books get sunk.
By my report the favorites are now in the range of 56% to 58% against the spread (not including pushes) on the 2009 pro football season depending on your sportsbooks spreads and when you got in with your plays.
But the inquiry is should wagerers think like most seasons this trend will even out with underdogs drawing even in the second half of the season. Most years I would say of course, but because of some horrible and downright bad teams I think the chalk can increase the winning percentage even more.
I’ll start with the St. Louis Rams who are 0-7 and 2-5 against the number. They have lost two games by getting blanked and are yielding an average of 30 points per game. They will be double-digit underdogs in almost every game left this season.
The Oakland Raiders do have two victories this season, but are an awful team and have one of the worst offenses posting just nine-points per game. The Raiders may only be favored one time from here on out. They have lost games by 20, 23, 37 and 38 points. This is not a team I can have my money on no matter how much the linesmakers give Oakland.
The Tampa Bay Bucs changed head coaches in the off-season letting a sound guy like Jon Gruden go and that has just made things worse. The Bucs are 0-7 and have covered just 1 of 7 games so far. The defense is giving up 29 point a game and their offense is scoring just fewer than two touchdowns. Tampa Bay will not be favored in any game left on their schedule this season.
The Tennessee Titans fall from grace was a seamless one as they won 13 games a season ago. This season they are tanking losing all seven of their games while covering just one. They have the worst defense in the league after seven weeks giving up 33-points a game.
On a high-note the biggest surprise of the season is the Denver Broncos sitting at 7-0 and cashing every game for their supporters. The New Orleans Saints have also been undefeated straight-up and against the spread. The Saints are averaging just less than 40 points per game.
