Free MLB Pick: Will the Cardinals Sweep the Cubs?
Posted May 21, 2009 by Steve Janus
The Chicago Cubs and St. Louis Cardinals, both ranked in the MLB Power Rankings, battle it out again on Thursday night with the Cubs a game ahead of the Cardinals in the N.L. Central Division. Chicago will try to avoid the sweep in this three game series after losing on Wednesday night 2 to 1. They send pitcher Sean Marshall to the mound. Marshall is 2 and 2 with a 4.02 ERA and a 1.34 WHIP.
The St. Louis Cardinals know that if they beat the Cubs on Thursday night, they will tie Chicago for second place in the N.L. Central Division. They send pitcher Adam Wainwright to the mound. Wainwright has been decent this year with a 3 and 2 record, a 3.83 ERA and a 1.40 WHIP.
Here is the BetUS online betting line for this game.

St. Louis Cardinals
Adam Wainwright – R -1 ½ +145 -140 U 8 ½ Ev O/U 4 ½ -115/-115
Here are a few online wagering trends for this game.
The Chicago Cubs are 1 and 7 in their last 8 games as an underdog.
The Over is 4 and 1 in the Chicago Cubs last 5 games when their opponent allows two runs or less in their previous game.
The St. Louis Cardinals are 4 and 0 in Adam Wainwright’s last 4 starts in game 3 of a series.
The Over is 11-4-2 in Adam Wainwright’s last 17 starts overall.
This is one tough game to handicap. The Cardinals could easily get the sweep with Wainwright pitching against Sean Marshall, but the Cubs are a tough team. They have maintained a lead over the Cardinals in the N.L. Central even though they have dropped the last two games against St. Louis.
Can the Cubs bounce back from the two losses? They were blanked in game one and then put up only a single run in game two. Now, in game three, Chicago will try to do something right.
Adam Wainwright is a decent pitcher but Chicago should rediscover their bats in this game. The Cubs, man for man in the batting line-up, are simply better than the Cardinals. Before the St. Louis series, the Cubs had scored 6, 6, 11, 5 and 5 runs in their previous five games.
I see them returning to that. Five runs sounds doable. So, that’s the bet I am going to make.
I’ll bet that the Chicago Cubs score over 4 runs at -110 in the sportsbook.
