MLB Odds: Chicago White Sox at LA Angels
Posted May 27, 2009 by Steve Janus
The Chicago White Sox offense has been an issue this year, so the news that arguably the team’s best hitter, outfielder Carlos Quentin, will be out at least the rest of this week does not bode well for White Sox bettors on WagerWeb.com.
And indeed the Sox are big +167 money line underdogs on WagerWeb.com for tonight’s game against the Angels.
Quentin returned to Chicago on Wednesday in a move that could eventually determine whether he can avoid the 15-day disabled list. He will be examined by team doctors after feeling a pop in his left foot Monday night. Quentin was diagnosed with plantar fasciitis, and he could be fitted with special shoes.
Quentin, hitting.229 with eight homers and 20 RBIs, won’t rejoin the Sox until after their current six-game trip. Manager Ozzie Guillen thought that Quentin returned too quickly from his series of left foot ailments, so thus the caution. Quentin is hitting .193 with one homer and seven RBI in his last 26 games.
“If we need to put him out there [on the DL] for his own good and the good of the club, we will do it,” Guillen said.

The White Sox, meanwhile, have won six of eight thanks to their pitching. Excluding a 20-1 loss to Minnesota last Thursday, the starters are 6-1 with a 1.68 ERA during that stretch after going 0-5 with a 7.88 ERA in the previous eight games.
Thus the pressure is on a struggling Gavin Floyd (3-4, 6.54) to keep that roll going. Actually, he was struggling but had his best outing of the season last time out, tossing a season-high eight innings and allowing two hits while striking out eight against the Pirates. That dropped his ERA more than a point.
Angels starter Jered Weaver (3-2, 2.52 ERA) is winless in his last three starts, but he is 3-0 with a 0.34 ERA in four starts against the White Sox. He pitched 15 scoreless innings against Chicago in 2008, allowing four hits.
L.A. needs a win to avoid a sweep, and it hasn’t been swept in a three-game home series since Kansas City did it June 24-27, 2007.
