Game Analysis: The Florida Marlins and Arizona Diamondbacks square-off in the desert for Game 2 of their four-game weekend series. At the time of this writing, we do not know the outcome of the first game of the series. The Fish will send Ricky Nolasco to the bump with his 8-6 record and ERA of 4.69 including a record of 6-2 on the highway with an ERA of 4.31. Nolasco is 4-1 versus the Diamondbacks since 97 with an ERA of 3.53 and a WHIP of 0.925. The one loss came in the desert almost to the day a year ago when he faced tonight’s starter Dan Haren, losing 8 to 0 going 6 innings giving up 9 hits with one walk and eight strikeouts in the loss. Haren went 9 innings in that game giving up 4 hits one walk and 10 strikeouts. Diamondbacks starter Haren is 7-6 this season posting an ERA of 4.38 including a mark of 5-3 at home with the same ERA. Nolasco is 16-5 in road games versus teams averaging 2.75 or less extra base hits per game the last three seasons including 9-1 during the second half of the season. Nolasco is 6-1 his last 7 outings when starting Game 2 of a series, 13-3 his last sixteen road starts versus a team with a losing record and 10-4 versus the NL West. We look for Ricky Nolasco to bounce back against the Diamondbacks and avenge last season’s poor performance in the desert. Back the puppy here as the Marlins take the second contest of this weekend series.

Game Analysis: Chicago won this opener last night but that is where it ends. The White Sox were supposed to make some noise in the American League Central but they have done anything but. Chicago is seven games under .500 and it has not been because of just one or two bad stretches as the entire season has been inconsistent. The White Sox have won back-to-back games only three times all season long which is a sign of very inconsistent play. Florida meanwhile has been playing better as it has won eight of its last 12 and the Marlins are 10-11 away from home which isn’t horrible. They have a big edge in pitching today with Chris Volstad. He has a 4.29 Era on the season but it is that high because of one really bad start where he allowed seven runs in 4.1 innings at Colorado. Take that away and his ERA drops to 3.33 in his other seven outings. Even with that start included, his season WHIP is a very solid 1.21. On the other side, Gavin Floyd is having a miserable season and there seems to be no end in sight. He has six non-quality outings in his eight starts on the year including three straight. He has a 7.00 ERA and 1.71 WHIP which are both off the charts. In his last start, even though he gave up just the one walk, Floyd only threw 61 of his 102 pitches for strikes. The White Sox are 2-8 in their last 10 games after scoring five runs or more in their previous game while the Marlins are 8-2 in their last 10 games against a starter with a WHIP greater than 1.30. The Marlins avenge that loss last night with a big effort this afternoon. 3* Florida Marlins

COLORADO ROCKIES +101

Game Analysis: Take Colorado vs. Florida (Friday 9 pm ET) – Both teams are coming off of nice wins last night. The difference is that Colorado won their series with the win, while Florida needed the win to avoid getting swept by the Astros. The pitching matchup is reasonably even here, with a slight edge to Colorado. The Rockies send out Greg Smith. He’s been very good in his last two outings, and has the advantage of playing a team that hasn’t seen him before here. He’s up against Ricky Nolasco. Nolasco is very good when he’s at his best – like he was last time out against Philadelphia. He hasn’t yet shown that he can be consistent, though, so we can’t reasonably expect him to come back with another strong outing – or at least we don’t have to fear it. Colorado is a solid 4-2 at home, so this is a good spot for them to be in. The Rockies have an edge in this game, so this price is reasonable and there is value. Game Analysis: Early in the season, analysis is going to be very thin as the plays are going to be based on value for the most part. Betting baseball is about finding the value and finding the spots where teams have an advantage over the line and not necessarily over the other team. That may sound strange and against common betting theory but baseball is a completely different betting situation because of the moneyline aspect of it. The Mets are in an early season funk before the season even starts. The offense is in just as bad shape as it ended last season as both Jose Reyes and Carlos Beltran are starting the season on the DL. Daniel Murphy is out as well while closer Francisco Rodriguez just returned to the team on Sunday after tending to his injured brother so he is far from there mentally. Monday’s starter Johan Santana had a rough spring and his success against the Marlins is not going to be enough to make him turn the corner right away. Despite posting a 1.29 ERA in two starts against Florida last season, the Mets lost both games. As for the Marlins, I am not sold on their offense but in this matchup it is the better unit. That offense will be behind Josh Johnson who has turned into one of the best pitchers in baseball. While Santana is the big name and has pitched extremely well against the Marlins, Johnson is unbeatable against the Mets. He is 7-0 with a 2.30 ERA and 1.09 WHIP in nine starts with Florida going 8-1 in those games. In games pitched in New York Johnson is 3-0 with a 2.52 ERA in four starts, allowing three runs or fewer in each outing. 3* Florida Marlins
