The Chicago Bulls came into the series a big favorite. The Bulls closed as 12.5 favorites but had to fight their way out of 12-point deficit in the third quarter in their 104-99 victory over the Pacers. The Bulls offense struggled shooting just 43% from the floor but nailed 26 of 32 free throws. The Pacers were competitive but only attempted 17 free throws. MVP candidate Derrick Rose and his game-high 39 points led the Bulls. The Bulls dominated the glass out rebounding the Pacers 49-34. The Bulls closed out the game with a 16-3 run over the last 3:34 of the game.

The Miami Heat blew a 13-point lead in the 4th quarter allowing the 76ers to score 12 straight points. The Heat hit 31 if 39 free throws while the 76ers were just 12-15. The Heat won the rebound battle 52-39. Chris Bosh led the way with 25 points and 12 rebounds. LeBron James hit just 4-14 shots but finished with 21 points and 14 rebounds. The Heat is 4-0 versus the 76ers this season and has won 16 of 19 games overall. The 76ers bench came up big with 36 points. Andre Iguodala scored just 4 points on 2-7 shooting.

The Atlanta Hawks pulled the biggest upset of the day by knocking off the Orlando Magic 103-93. Dwight Howard was superman scoring 46 points and snatching 19 rebounds. Jameer Nelson did his part scoring 27 points but the remaining players scored a combined 20 points. The Hawks had a well-balanced attack that saw five players score at least 13 points. The Hawks shot an impressive 51% from the field and 72% from the free throw line. The Magic continue to struggle form the charity stripe hitting 19 of 31 free throws. The Hawks pressured the Magic into 18 turnovers and turned it over just nine times. The Magic struggled from beyond the arc hitting six of 22 attempts.

The Dallas Mavericks received a big night from Jason Kidd, a career best six 3-pointers and 24 points, in route to an 89-81 victory. Dirk Nowitzki scored 18 of his 28 points in the fourth quarter after a very slow start. LaMarcus Aldridge led the way for the Trail Blazers with 27 points. The Trailblazers have lost 14 of their 16 road playoff games. The Mavericks hit 25-29 free throws while the Trailblazers hit just 9-13 free throws. Dallas hit 51% of their three point attempts while Portland was just 13%. The Trailblazers had 22 assists to just 14 for the Mavericks.

The 2nd day of the playoffs saw three favorites go down and the other favorite squeezed out a victory. The New Orleans Hornets set a record with only three turnovers in their 109-100 upset win over the Los Angeles Lakers. Chauncey Billups injured his leg in the final minute of the Boston Celtics 87-85 win over the New York Knicks. The Underdogs were a money making 7-1 over the first two days. There were controversial calls in two of the games that affected the outcome of the games.

The Memphis Grizzlies capitalized in their 101-98 win over the top seeded San Antonio Spurs. The Spurs missed the offense of Manu Ginobli. The Grizzlies pounder the ball inside and scored 40 points in the paint. Zach Randolph and Marc Gasol combined for 49 points on 19-35 shooting and cleaned the glass with 19 rebounds. Point guard Mike Conley had 10 of the teams 22 assists.

Chris Paul struggled over his last 10 games shooting just 40% from the field. He shrugged it off and hit 11 of 18 shots and dished out 14 assists, as a team the Hornets shared the ball for 24 assists, with only two of the teams record setting three turnovers. The Hornet’s bench was a force scoring 39 points on the road while Lakers reserves only pitched in 21 points. The Lakers interior defense allowed for 52 points in the paint. The Lakers were not able to solve the pick and roll offense of the Hornets. Kobe Bryant had a minor head injury but finished with 34 points.

The New York Knicks were not happy with a late game offensive foul on Carmelo Anthony. Anthony was catching the basketball when called for the ticky tack foul in a physical game. Billups was missed at the end of the game as the as Anthony had two missed shots and two turnovers in his last four possessions. Kendrick Perkins scored a basket with just over a minute left in the game. The Celtics were efficient on the offensive end of the court with 20 assists and won the rebounding battle 39-29.

The Oklahoma Thunder went to their two all-stars to outlast the Denver Nuggets. Forward Kevin Durant scored a playoff career high 41 points and nine rebounds and Russell Westbrook scored 31 points and dished out seven assists. The Nuggets had five players score in double digits but lacked a go-to- guy in the final seconds of the game. The Nuggets scored 46 points in the paint and dished out 23 assists. The Nuggets were horrible from beyond the arc hitting just 4-16 attempts while the Thunder looked sharp hitting 9-19 attempts.

Hornets/Warriors OVER 201.5

Pick Analysis:

New Orleans is mired in a slump; the Hornets have lost 7 of their last 9 games since they won at Golden St back on January 26th. Their problem has been their weak defensive play as they’ve allowed six of those nine opponents to score 101 points or more. And tonight’s challenge will be to slowdown the potent Golden St offense, something the Hornet’s defense doesn’t figure to do since they are in bad current form.

The Warriors are playing at home for the 15th time in their last 17 ballgames. They’ve scored 100 points or more in 12 of those 14 home games so that trend should continue tonight, especially since they’ll be facing a struggling New Orleans’ defense. This is also the third meeting of the season between these two teams; the first two games had 213 and 215 points scored. Golden St’s defense allows 105 points per game on 47.7% shooting on their home floor so the Hornets should once again eclipse the 100-point mark against the Warriors tonight. This game will also have plenty of pace to it, and unless both teams are ice cold from the field, this will be a high-scoring game that gets up and Over the total.

New Orleans Hornets -4

Pick Analysis:

The New Orleans Hornets are showing solid value as just a 4-point favorite over the lowly Minnesota Timberwolves Monday. Both teams played last night, with the Hornets winning by 7 over the Hawks while the Timberwolves beat the Cavaliers by a single point for a rare win. Minnesota is just 7-24 this season and have won back-to-back games only once this year. I don’t expect them to put together only their second winning streak of the season tonight against a very good New Orleans club that is 18-12 this year.

This play falls under a system that is 42-14 (75%) ATS since 1996. It tells us to bet against home underdogs (MINNESOTA) – terrible team – outscored by their opponents by 6+ points/game, after a close win by 3 points or less. Minnesota is giving up a ridiculous 109.6 PPG this season and getting outscored by 7.2 PPG on average. The Hornets are allowing just 91.7 PPG overall and 93.9 PPG on the road. Minnesota is 17-35 ATS in home games after a close win by 3 points or less since 1996. The Timberwolves are 7-18 ATS in home games after 1 or more consecutive wins over the last 3 seasons. Roll with the Hornets Monday.

New Orleans Hornets -10

Pick Analysis:

1) This is the perfect opportunity to jump back on the Hornets, as they take on a Kings team that is really struggling on the road. Sacramento is just 2-7 ATS away from home this season, and are being outscored by over 10 points a game. New Orleans is rock solid on their home court, starting the season 9-3, and have been a solid choice ATS at home against teams with a losing record.

Preseason prognosticators and handicapping analysis focuses in on what they expect to happen, based on the draft and offseason moves, but there are always surprises at the start of each season. Here’s a look at some of the early NBA surprises, good, bad and ugly.

Hawks: Didn’t we see this athletic young team taking Boston to seven games in the playoffs? That was three years ago. They are still young and athletic – and getting better, particularly on the road, winning 7 of their first 9 road contests.

On sheer depth and talent alone you can see why this team is playing so well: Josh Smith, Marvin Williams and Al Horford in the frontcourt, Jamal Crawford, Joe Johnson and Mike Bibby in the backcourt. This team is loaded with offensive options (15th in the NBA in points), but what is most impressive is the defense, 10th in points allowed and just 33% shooting beyond the arc, sixth in the league. That partly explains a recent 6-3 run under the total.

Thunder: No Kevin Durant? No Jeff Green? No problem! Oklahoma City was without those two stars when they went to Boston and won as a +9 dog allowing 84 points. Offense is not a problem for this young group, in the Top 10 in scoring with a winning record both home and away.

With all the attention on Durant and Green, Oklahoma City Thunder’s point guard Russell Westbrook is in just his third NBA season, but has emerged as a top-five point guard and has been their best player. Westbrook averages of 23.8 points, 5.2 rebounds, 8.3 assists and 2.0 steals. He also has boosted his field-goal percentage from 41.8 percent a year ago to 43.9 percent this season. Despite that impressive defensive effort at Boston, this is still an uptempo team, starting 13-3 over the total. Note that Oklahoma City started 7-1 with Serge Ibaka in the starting lineup.

Mavericks: The Dallas Mavericks are surprising opponents early in the season, but not by running and gunning, which is what they used to do. Yes, Jason Kidd, Jason Terry and Dirk Nowitzki are still here, but the Mavs have morphed into a defensive team, second in the NBA in points allowed. They are also in the Top 5 allowing 43% shooting.

The newcomer to look at is 7-foot-1 center Tyson Chandler, who has always preferred to be a role player under the boards, blocking shots and grabbing rebounds. Chandler surpassed 15 rebounds for the second time in three games, recording 17 rebounds — while adding three blocks — versus Miami. The defense helped propel the Mavs during a 9-3 run under the total holding 8 straight opponents under 100.

Hornets: And speaking of defense, no one is doing it better than the New Orleans Hornets, tops in the league in points allowed. This team still has David West (18.6 ppg) and Chris Paul (16.5 ppg, 10 apg) running the show, but newcomers Emeka Okafor, Trevor Ariza and Marco Belinelli have changed the depth and dynamics. Belinelli is the top shooting guard in the Hornets’ rotation while Okafor is a defensive and rebounding force. All of this explains why veteran Peja Stojakovic became expendable.

Keep tabs on home games, too: Despite a franchise-record start, the Hornets have experienced a decline in attendance. If the Hornets do not average crowds of at least 14,213 for the next 13 games at the New Orleans Arena, the franchise can opt out of its current lease agreement with the state. They started 11-6 under the total, though 4-3 over the total at home. To put more fans in the seats, will they go more uptempo at home?

Miami Heat: 70 wins! 72? Maybe the Big 3 had better focus on getting above .500. The Heat has been the punching bags of the NBA with so many rooting against them after LeBron James essentially put his own team together this summer. They have been worse than everyone imagined, bad on the road partly because of a lack of frontcourt height (19th in rebounding).

The defense is good, but the depth took a hit with the loss of role player Udonis Haslem for the season, their top rebounder. Then there’s the circus, with a players-only meeting and the national attention of the literal run-in between LeBron James and his coach. Then an anonymous source close to the team who claimed the Heat’s players are beginning to question their team’s leadership. No one’s feeling sorry for you, LeBron, as this is what YOU wanted. After a 4-1 ATS start, they have been huge money-burners going 1-12 against the number.

Miami has been on fire since a season-opening loss to the Boston Celtics by picking up four straight victories by an average of 22.8 points. The Heat are still looking for forward Chris Bosh to join the offensive party, as he’s scoring 11 fewer points than his career-best 24.0 points per game in 2009-10. “I don’t care about the numbers,” he commented. “The only number I care about is winning.” The 4-1 start matches the best start in franchise history through five games and the team has held its opponents starting line-up to an average of 36.5 points per game over the four-game streak. Spreading the ball around has been a major part of the team’s success the past two games, dishing out 60 assists over that time. Miami is 2-0 ATS as a road favorite of 6.5 to 9 points.

The Heat split the season series, 1-1, with the Hornets last season with each team winning on their home courts. Miami is 32-37 all-time versus the Hornets in the regular season, including 12-23 in games played in New Orleans. Head coach Eric Spoelstra has done a great job of handling the roster five games into the season, which will be a common theme all season long. “All of our guys have the right thing in mind,” he commented. “It’s a unique situation.”

New Orleans is going through a period of discovering its identity and picked up a 107-99 road victory in Houston on Wednesday night. “We’re a defensive team, we’re still trying to find our identity,” said point guard Chris Paul. “We’re no where near where we want to be, but if we defend, we give ourselves the opportunity to win.” It’s important to note that with its last win, New Orleans matched the best start in franchise history. The Hornets have won seven of the last nine meetings between the two teams dating back to January 4, 2006. The squad is a perfect 2-0 ATS at home this season and 40-46 ATS over the last three years.

The Hornets defense has managed to hold each of its first four opponents to under 100 points and that intensity has actually led to an average of 14.8 fastbreak points per game. “It’s a good start 4-0, but with 78 more games to go, we’re not going to be a team that allows for our record to dictate our play,” said first-year head coach Monty Williams. A key for tonight’s contest is bench play, which may favor the home team that’s averaging 32.5 points compared to 27.5 for its opponents per contest.

Bettors may back the Heat due to their 10-2 ATS mark on Fridays, while the Hornets are 8-1 ATS versus the Southeast Division.

NEW ORLEANS HORNETS +6

Game Analysis: Even though Chris Paul did not have a good game in first contest back, his presence just makes the Hornets a better team. New Orleans won against Dallas on Monday in the first game of a five-game homestand and it looks to carry that momentum over into Wednesday as it takes on the best team in the NBA. The Hornets came into that game against the Mavericks with losses in 12 of their previous 15 games so it has been a rough stretch. To their credit, 10 of those 15 games were on the road and all were played with Paul sitting on the bench. In the 25 games that he was absent, New Orleans went 8-17 and to put that into perspective, the Hornets previous 17 losses were grouped with 23 wins which shows how much he was missed during this recent stint. With New Orleans clearly out of the playoff race, Paul easily could have shut it down for the season but even he said, it is about the team, no matter what position it is in, and moving forward into next season. Cleveland continues to win as it is now riding a seven-game winning streak as well as having gone 13-1 over its last 14 games. This includes a 6-1 record on the road but the last four road wins have come against some very average teams and while New Orleans can be lumped into that group, it is definitely a different feel now. The Cavaliers have all but sewn up first place in the Eastern Conference as well as first place in the entire league unless they completely implode with is highly unlikely. While the Cavaliers have been winning, they have not been winning money as they are just 36-34-1 ATS this season including a 29-32 ATS mark as a favorite. They are 8-1 in their last nine games but against the number they are just 3-6 and that is the sure sign of being completely overvalued. New Orleans lost the first meeting in Cleveland, without Paul, so it has the revenge angle going its way and it is 27-13 ATS in its last 40 home games revenging a same season loss. The Hornets did cover that game and they are 8-3 ATS this season when playing a team with a winning percentage greater than .700 and they are 25-7 ATS in their last 32 home games against teams with a winning road record. 3* New Orleans Hornets

Game Analysis: The OKC Thunder look to pretty much have a death grip on the six hole in the ultra-competitive NBA West but as we all know, nothing is for certain. That said, the Thunder have a seven game lead on the Hornets and can go along way in administering the dagger with a win here. They get it! New Orleans starting to feel the effects of life without Chris Paul, 1-4 SU and 0-5 ATS L5 and falling fast. Hornets not much on the road and 8-19 ATS as a RD at this level. The Thunder are 5-1 SU and ATS in L6 and have the added benefit of added rest, a spot where they are 8-2 ATS with more than two days of rest. The Thunder have an amazing young nucleus of players with Kevin Durant, Jeff Green, and Russell Westbrook. The Thunder are going to be a surprising tough out in their first ever playoffs and fully expect them to take care of business against New Orleans. OKC 106-92.
