Game Analysis:

It’s gut-check time for Tampa Bay. Off Wednesday’s 5-1 home loss to the Rangers, the Devil Rays know they must pick up a victory in the second game of this American League Division Series or they’ll need to sweep the Rangers in Texas to force a game five.

Rays manager Joe Maddon will hand the ball to “Big Game James” Shields and ask him to step up one more time. In his final three starts of the year, Shields got rocked pretty good allowing 16 earned runs and 27 hits in 16.1 innings of work. That’s bad enough for an ugly 0-3 record and an enormous 8.82 ERA! Fortunately, James’ numbers at home are solid enough to keep me interested here. Inside the bubble at Tropicana Field, No. 33 has been scratched for 51 earned runs and 111 hits in 101.1 innings of work. That’s equates to a respectable 4.53 ERA!

Texas will counter with southpaw C.J. Wilson. Even though Wilson’s numbers are solid this season (15-8 record with a nifty 3.35 ERA), C.J.’s efforts in his last six starts weren’t the greatest. With 32.1 frames in the bank, the Newport Beach, California native got spanked for 21 earned runs and 34 hits. That adds up to a 3-3 record and an elevated 5.85 ERA!

If you need a little technical support to make this investment, consider the following: The Rays have feasted on left-handed pitching posting “W’s” in 33 of their last 49. Meanwhile, the visiting Rangers have slipped in the underdog role posting a dismal 5-13 SU record in their last 18 tries.

The Devil Rays have plenty of playoff experience on their roster and they’re not about to blink. As for the Rangers, they already accomplished their goal by winning at least one of the first two games. “Big Game James” gets the job done for the home team. Texas belts in the runs at home, but on the road, they average just 4.4 per game, leading to a 31-23 UNDER mark away from home. In 31 day games this season, they have managed to score only 3.8 runs per game. Tampa Bay averaged 5.5 per game on the road, but only 4.5 per game at home, leading to a 34-26 UNDER mark at home. Tampa Bay pitching has led the charge allowing a total of 22 runs in their last nine games, or less than 2.5 per contest. Texas is 50-24-3 to the UNDER in game three of a series with Tampa Bay right with them at 39-18-3, for a combined game three UNDER mark of 89-42-6. When facing a winning team, the Rangers are 78-55 UNDER the past two seasons. And, after a game in which they allowed 8+ runs, they are 29-13 UNDER dating back to last season. At home, the Rays are 14-4 UNDER this season to a total of 9 to 9.5. I like the UNDER here.

Game Analysis: Two struggling offenses take the field in Detroit on Monday night as the Tigers host Tampa Bay. The Rays are coming off a game in which they managed to get just one hit off of Brandon Morrow in Toronto on Sunday. Tampa hopes that David Price can halt the slide. The lefty is 14-5 with a 2.82 ERA this season. He’s 2-0 with a 2.66 ERA in his last three starts and he has already led the Rays to victory against the Tigers. In that game, he gave up two runs and seven hits in 6.1 innings of work. Last year, he held the Tigers to one run and five hits in a game in Detroit. Johnny Damon (1-9), Jhonny Peralta (0-7), Miguel Cabrera (0-7), Ryan Raburn (1-7), Gerald Laird (1-6), and Austin Jackson (1-4) all struggle against Price. Before scoring 18 runs in their last two games, Detroit had only scored eight runs in their previous four games.

Armando Galarraga makes the start for Detroit. He’s 3-4 with a 4.32 ERA this season. In his last three starts, Galarraga is 0-1 with a 3.72 ERA and two of those games went Under the total. Jason Bartlett (1-9), Kelly Shoppach (0-9), BJ Upton (1-7), and Carl Crawford (0-3) all struggle with the Tigers starter. Tampa has scored just 39 runs in their last 10 games. Both teams feature bullpens that have ERA’s below 3.20 this season which will help keep the run totals low if either of the starters falter a bit. We expect a low-scoring game so we’ll recommend a play on the Under tonight between the Rays and Tigers.

Game Analysis:

A big series between the top two teams in the A.L. East starts on Friday night in Tampa Bay as the Rays host the Yankees. New York is sending the struggling Phil Hughes to the mound. He’s 2-1 with a 5.19 ERA in his last three starts. The righty is sporting a 6.26 ERA over his last seven starts and he is struggling due to the increased innings he’s pitched. Hughes has given up at least six hits in five straight starts and in eight of his last nine starts overall. He hasn’t started against the Rays since 2007 when he went 1-1 in two outings. B.J. Upton (2-6), Carl Crawford (2-5), Carlos Pena (2-3), Jason Bartlett (1-1), and Reid Brignac (1-1) all hit Hughes well. Tampa has won six straight games and seven of their last eight games overall. They are 25-13 against the A.L. East whom they score an average of 5.8 runs per game against.

After a slow start, Wade Davis has bounced back big time for Tampa Bay. The righty is 3-0 with a 2.11 ERA giving up just five runs over his last 21.3 innings of work. Davis is 1-1 against the Yankees defeating them the last time they met. He held New York to two runs and seven hits in 5.7 innings of work. Mark Teixeira (1-7), Nick Swisher (0-4), and Juan Miranda (0-2) have poor numbers against Davis. The Yankees are hitting just .256 on the road, and since we expect Tampa Bay to hit Hughes well, we’ll recommend a play on the Rays in this game tonight.

RAYS/BLUE JAYS UNDER 8 RUNS (-120)

Game Analysis: Tampa Bay snapped Toronto’s four-game winning streak when they came back in the ninth inning on Tuesday night. The Rays send David Price to the mound where he’s 7-2 with a 2.56 ERA in 10 outings. His best start of the season came against these Jays on April 25th. The lefty went the distance giving up just four hits while striking out nine batters. Price is 3-0 with a 2.92 ERA in four career starts against Toronto. Vernon Wells (3-12), Alex Gonzalez (1-5), Jose Molina (1-5), Lyle Overbay (0-3), Mike McCoy (0-3), and Raul Chavez (0-2) all have poor numbers against Price. As a team, Toronto is hitting just .188 against left handers this season. The Jays are 4-6 in those games scoring just 2.8 runs per contest.

Toronto’s Shaun Marcum is 5-1 with a 2.59 ERA after winning three straight starts against Baltimore, Arizona, and Minnesota. Marcum hasn’t faced Tampa Bay since 2008 when he pitched against them twice. In fact, in three starts, the Jays righty is 1-0 with a 0.83 ERA against Tampa Bay. Rays hitters are 7 for 54 against Marcum in those games. This series has produced 24 Unders in the last 41 meetings. Tampa Bay was hitting .232 in their previous seven games before last night’s 7-run explosion. With Price and Marcum facing off in this one, we’ll recommend a play on the Under between the Rays and Blue Jays tonight.

TAMPA BAY RAYS/NEW YORK YANKEES OVER 9 (-110)

Game Analysis: The Rays beat up the Yankees in the Bronx on Wednesday night. They’ll try to do it again tonight behind James Shields. Unfortunately, the Yankees have great numbers against the Rays righty. Shields is a dismal 1-7 with a 5.77 ERA in 10 career starts against New York. Derek Jeter (12-33), Robinson Cano (12-26), and Marcus Thames (2-5) have the best numbers against him. The Yankees are averaging almost six runs per game and are hitting .300 at home this season. They are smacking out 6.5 runs per game against teams in their division as well.

Andy Pettitte gets the start for the Yankees. He has yet to pick up a loss this season despite dealing with injury. He’s given up five runs over his last 17.3 innings of work. The lefty is 16-5 against the Rays with a 3.88 ERA. But each of his last three outings against Tampa Bay has been difficult; he has allowed 13 runs and 20 hits over his last 16.3 innings pitched. Carl Crawford (12-39), Carlos Pena (11-35), Gabe Kapler (7-25), Jason Bartlett (7-18), Dioner Navarro (5-17), Ben Zobrist (4-12), and Sean Rodriguez (1-2) all hit Pettitte well. As a team, the Rays are averaging almost six runs per game on the road this season. This game has all the makings of a high-scoring slugfest so we’ll recommend a play on the Over.

The Rays are king of the home field as they are 70-30 in their last 100 here against a team with a losing road record. While the Tigers have been great at home, they have been just 27-39 on the road, and have won just six of their last 21 on the highway. The Rays have even ramped-it-up higher at home against a right-hand starter as they are now 73-26 in their last 99 here against a righty. When they wheel out Niemann to start at home, they have won their last seven as a home chalk and 12 of his last 15 as a favorite overall. The Tigers are just 5-16 in their last 21 on field turf, and it will take more than Verlander to win this one. I’m going with the Rays here.
