Saturday’s Free Winner: Michigan State Spartans.

Nebraska snapped a two-game slide in this series with last season’s home victory, 38-27. Now they must travel to East Lansing to face a Michigan State opponent that happens to be a covering machine. That’s right, my friends the Spartans have covered all three games this season, and going back a bit further five in a row and eight of their last nine overall contests. They face the same tough opponents the Cornhuskers do being in the Big Ten. Meanwhile, what can we say about Nebraska? They had three very easy opponents thus far being favored by as little as 23.5 points and as high as 30.5 points. They failed to cover their last outing against North Dakota, and going back a bit, they have failed to cover four of their last six and seven of their last 10 overall outings. Michigan State had a lot of trouble in their last outing on the road at Notre Dame, failing to get their ground game in gear along with a lackluster passing attack. But I feel they’re in for a big bounce back in this matchup here. Yes, Nebraska is 3-0. But those victories came against two MAC teams and one FCS opponent. If you recall a season ago, they failed to win any of their final three games against Penn State, Iowa, and Utah. They were smoked in all three of those games. They’re also not the greatest covering on the road either. While the MSU offense leaves a lot to be desired, their defense is good enough to put some pressure on Nebraska’s quarterback and keep this game a lot closer than the point spread. Playing in East Lansing in front of their very loud and loyal fans gives the Spartans a big edge in this matchup. Making them an underdog in their first Big Ten outing at home will further motivate them to come out here and make a good appearance. The Cornhuskers have big matchups upcoming against the Terrapins, the Hoosiers, the Ducks and the Huskies all in a row. Maybe they’ll overlook this week’s opponent just a bit. Take MSU. Thank you.

I’m going to keep this breakdown just like me… very short and extremely sweet (lol). Very simply, I feel Washington shouldn’t be laying better than a touchdown in this matchup. Sure, they have won all three of their games this season thus far. But they have failed to cover all three as well. It seems the odds makers are overvaluing the Huskies big-time. Minnesota, who are 2-1 both straight up and against the spread this season, and going back a bit, they have covered five of their last six outings. The Big Ten is a very tough conference. And let me be even more sincere, no one gives the Golden Gophers a chance in hell of winning the Conference. But one thing they can do is hang in with tough teams. So far this season they are posting over 37.7 PPG with a strong passing attack and a solid defense yielding just 17.3 PPG. Yes, once again Washington looks like they’re going to have an aerial assault. But they have very little ground game to speak of which makes their offense very one-dimensional. I will give their defense some credit yielding just 13.3 PPG, and snagging five takeaways. The one thing that gives Minnesota an advantage here is they have no pressure on them. Nobody expects them to do too much this season. However, the Huskies have enormous pressure, and have a couple of tough opponents on deck as they face the Trojans on the road next week then the Hawkeyes at home. Who knows if they may be in a little bit of a look a look ahead spot or even take their foot off the gas a bit here. I just think this is way too many points to give a team that that can cover the spread. Take the Minnesota Golden Gophers. Thank you.

Sunday Free Winner: San Francisco 49ers.

San Francisco has dominated their division rival, taking six of the last eight meetings SU, going 5-3 ATS during that span. They are looking strong so far this season sporting a 2-0 record both SU/ATS as their offense ranks in the top-10 in just about every major category, including the one that means the most, scoring where they average over 31.0 PPG. By the way, very uncharacteristic for teams at the start of a season, they’ve also only turned the ball over once. Meanwhile, the Arizona Cardinals look to be a trainwreck. Yes, they did open up their season on the road with a big surprise victory over the Los Angeles Chargers as nearly a double-digit underdog. But last week came back down to Earth as they got shellacked at home by the Seattle Seahawks, 31-7. This team has a lot of problems, my friends. Scoring is certainly one of them. If you like numbers, you’ll love these: Arizona is 1-10 SU in their last 11 divisional games and 1-9 ATS as divisional underdogs of seven or more points. They were also winless against the NFC West last season (0-6). With Jacoby Brissett at the helm, I doubt very much they’re going to be able to move the chains at all here. The 49ers defense looks solid and remember, they have the luxury of something they haven’t had in the past, some of their biggest names are healthy. San Francisco is a well-coached, smart team. Although they have Denver up next followed by a road game at Seattle, I doubt very much they’re going to be in a look ahead mode here. They know these division victories mean a lot. This is their final chance to find tune their team on both side sides of the line of scrimmage before their schedule gets more difficult. Take the San Francisco 49ers. Thank you.
